Beard Transplantation

Just as with hair transplantation, beard transplantation can also be performed using the follicular unit extraction method (FUE). Beard transplants can also refer to any procedure aimed at rebuilding a new beard, or improving the existing one. For these reconstructive procedures of the beard, the hair is extracted from the scalp and transplanted to the areas where they are needed.

Why use beard hair instead of hair on the scalp?

In most hair transplants, the specialist extracts hair from the back of the scalp, known as the donor area, and transplanted where needed. The hairs of that part of the scalp are particularly resistant to hair loss and also strong enough to support transplantation. However, not all patients have enough hair in the donor area and some do not have it at all. For this type of situation, body hair of the chest or beard is the best alternative. Again, not all patients have this type of hair. In these cases, facial hair can be extracted and transplanted to other areas of the scalp.

Beard transplants can work for patients with male pattern baldness, but not for other types of alopecia. For example, patients with alopecia universalis have no hair in their body, so they are not eligible for this type of procedure.
